Finance For A Car

What a car really costs to run

Your loan repayment is one number. These are the others.

Before you choose a repayment, build a monthly picture of the whole car. We have deliberately left out dollar figures, since costs vary by state, model and how you drive. Instead, use this list to collect your own quotes.

CostHow to find your number
Registration and CTPUse your state or territory transport authority's online calculator
InsuranceGet a comprehensive quote for the exact car and your postcode
Fuel or chargingCheck the model's rated consumption and your weekly distance
ServicingAsk a local mechanic or the manufacturer's capped-price servicing, if offered
Tyres and brakesAsk what is due soon when you get the pre-purchase inspection
Roadside assistanceOptional, but price it if the car is older
Tolls and parkingEstimate from your regular routes
Repairs bufferSet aside a monthly amount, especially for higher-kilometre cars

Turning the list into a budget

Add the monthly equivalent of each item, then add the loan repayment. If the total makes your budget tight, that is useful information before signing rather than after. A cheaper car, a bigger deposit or a different term may help; so might waiting.

The ATO also has guidance if you use the car for work, and ASIC MoneySmart has budgeting tools. When your numbers look right, you can start a finance enquiry.
